Safe Checks Before You Book A Repair
A few minutes with the system tells you a lot, and none of it involves tools or panels:
- Switch the unit off at the isolator and let the ice melt fully. This can take several hours.
- Pull the return air filter or the split system's front panel filters and hold them up to the light. If you cannot see through them, that is very likely your cause.
- Check the outdoor unit for leaves, grass clippings or anything stacked against it, and clear a good gap around it.
- Look at the copper pipework for oily residue, which can point to a refrigerant leak.
If the filters come up clean and the ice returns after a thaw, stop there. Anything past the filter belongs to a licensed technician, because refrigerant work is legally restricted work.
